Skopelos

SkopelosOnly a few miles away from Skiathos, you can sail to the picturesque island of Skopelos. The capital and main port of the island , also called Skopelos , is on the east coast , and the second port, Loutraki, is on the west. The north-west coast is, as usually, more exposed to strong wind, so the beaches are on the south.

The island is full of pine trees, with fertile soil where olives, vines and plums (for which Skopelos is famous) are grown. Skopelos town itself is a picturesque village with red-roofed houses and flowered balconies, and no less than 120 churches and chapels. You can enjoy your coffee at the waterside cafes, or - if you get "tired" of being lazy- you can visit the small folk art museum and wander in the cobbled streets, and if you are lucky, you may even see women wearing the traditional embroidered costume of which they are very proud.

The island boasts a number of ancient ruins as well as a venetian fortress, but the inhabitants are also very proud of the island's lovely beaches with shallow and safe emerald waters : Limnonari, Panormos, Milia (regarded as the best on the island), Elios, Staphylos (where a Minoan settlement- one of the few archaeological sites in the Sporades - has been discovered), and others.
