Nafplio

NafplioNafplio is considered to be one of the most picturesque and "aristocratic" towns of modern Greece. Nafplio was the first capital of the Modern Greek state (until 1834), and the influence of the western culture is very obvious in the old town which remebles a lot to traditional cities of Central Europe.

One of the most important features of Nafplio is the imposing Venetian fortress, the Palamidi and the little fortified islet Bourtzi the Palamidi in earlier times was accesible by climbing up its 999 steps. Nowadays there is a road up to the entrance but the more romantic (and tiring!) way of the steps is still active. Near Nafplio there is a great deal of resorts and beaches, enabling the visitors to enjoy the waters of the argolic gulf. The most important are the Arvanitia beach in Nafplio, Tolo, Drepano, Kranidi and Karathonas.
